Ageing Better Together Conference

Leading speakers from sport, government and lobbying groups, will come together at Wembley Stadium on Monday 10 October 2011 for the first Ageing Better Together conference organised by Age UK and the Sport and Recreation Alliance. This event, with high profile speakers such as former Olympic gold medallist Jonathan Edwards CBE, Deputy Chair of London 2012, is set to define how to make sport and physical activity more relevant for an increasingly ageing population. (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/health-wellbeing/ageing-better-together/)

Tom Wright, Chief Executive of Age UK and Peter Wanless from the Big Lottery Fund will be discussing support for projects involving people in later life.

Ageing Better Together will highlight the successful Age UK fit as a fiddle (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/health-wellbeing/fit-as-a-fiddle/national-programme-/) programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund. Fit as a fiddle supports people over 50 with physical activity, healthy eating and mental well-being and it hosts innovative projects around the country which promote healthy ageing based around the needs and ideas of local people For example, in the South East, fit as a fiddle supports a New Age Kurling group and in the North East, 72-year-old George Schollar volunteers at a local leisure centre as part of the Physical Activity Motivators project in Gateshead. This partnership project is designed to support and encourage people who are recovering from illness whether in the gym an outdoor activity group or an exercise class.

It can add years to our lives, but most importantly, exercise keeps us happy and helps us maintain our independence (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/health-wellbeing/keeping-fit/exercise-materials/ ). It is important that with our ever increasing ageing population that we all ensure we can age better together in a positive and active way. (http://www.ageuk.org.uk/latest-news/older-peoples-fitness-event-held/ )

Tim Lamb, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, said: Physical activity is important at every stage of life but raising your heartbeat and flexing your muscles can be even more important the older you get. Great Ideas For Home Health Care

It is important to understand the basic needs for good health when you are considering home health care. There are certain simple strategies that you can put in place to ensure the well-being and freedom from illness for yourself and your family.

The home itself needs to be kept clean but it isn’t necessary to obsess about germs. Exposure to minor bacteria helps the body develop a strong immune system. Simple measures like hand washing before meals and after playing with animals, as well as bathing daily, are good effective measures. Keep warm in winter and cool in summer and try to avoid being around sick people. Make sure the home is pest-free to ensure healthy humans.

What you eat has a major impact on your well-being. Your duty of care to your body is to eat a nutritionally-balanced diet. While you might love to eat take-out, these foods should not form a regular part of a healthy diet. Cook at home and experiment with making this type of food using fresh vegetables and lean meat. Home cooked food retains more nutrition than pre-prepared foods.

Eat three meals a day or five smaller meals/snacks. Each meal should include a protein portion, no bigger than your palm. Eat mostly white meat and try cooking other protein foods like eggs and pulses for variety.

Your meal should be half fresh vegetables, in a variety of colors, a quarter carbohydrates and a quarter protein. Look for different recipes and experiment with various cooking methods for vegetables so that your meals are interesting as well as nutritious. Involve the whole family in menu choices and food preparation.

Snacks can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet as long as you mostly avoid fatty foods and those loaded with sugar and processed products. These add nothing of value to your health and are loaded with things that can adversely affect your well-being. Good snacks include reduced-fat dairy, fruit, smoothies, nuts and wholesome home baked goods that use dried fruits and nuts.

An important part of effective home health care involves regular physical activity. It isn’t possible to be really healthy without exercise. There’s no need to get all sweaty and puffed either; any activity that increases your heart rate and breathing is good for you. Find activities that you enjoy and have fun while you improve your immune system and cardio strength, lift your mood and keep at a healthy weight. Try walking, swimming, cycling, gardening, dancing, tai chi or yoga.

Rest and recreation are a necessary part of wellness. Sleep is when the body repairs and recuperates; we need about 7 hours on most nights, for good health. You need recreation and time to hang out with friends and family to maintain a healthy lifestyle as well, so factor this into your schedule.

A household first-aid kit covers minor accidents and ailments but keep it out of reach of children. See your dentist and your doctor regularly for a check up, as many problems are more easily fixed if found early. Eat a balanced diet, get plenty of rest and exercise, manage stress, be kind to yourself and you have the basics of home health care.

Maintaining an engaged daily routine results in better physical and mental health the over 60′s. But constant movement, however, can expose your family to varied health problems which can occur while they are alone at home. The right solution is to set up a crisis phone alarm and that means you or other designated guardian may come for the aid on the elderly if they trigger an alert.

An mobile call alarm has important benefits over other designs of home alert systems which is a medical alert system alternative.

Push-button operation: Accidents and mishaps happen quickly and can disable seniors. An emergency contact phone is operated easily by pressing just one number with a mobile phone’s keypad. This automatically calls a group of people nominated because of the user to obtain notifications and alerts of emergencies.

Direct dialing: Recalling names and numbers can be hard for any senior relative whose memory is probably not sharp. The emergency phone company protects dialing several numbers for ones elderly home companion once they triggers the product alarm.

Wide area coverage: A phone security alarm will depend on the ready infrastructure of mobile phone networks to make emergency calls unlike pendant alert systems which must be connected primarily to your radio signal receiving device to supply the alert at an office. A radio signal device can face some problems for instance lack of a clear line of vision connecting both transmitter and receiving base unit. It is also vulnerable to power failure which can happen for unexpected expenses.

Tracking ability: A cell phone’s digital signal might be traced using GPS technology adding to your comfort which the whereabouts of older relatives could be the least of the worries during an urgent situation.

Emergency notification service: Individuals who have been designated because of the user of any medical phone alert system will receive important alerts of calls that have been made, their serious amounts of any resolution provided throughout the emergency.

Quick and simple use: No minimum investment is required with an emergency phone alarm service. You simply won’t should purchase new equipment and will occurs existing mobile or home phone line. The house alert strategy is not an application pots a download and complicated installation procedure but a network service that is easily activated over the provider’s website. The system is able to use immediately upon activation.

As a network service, a serious event phone wireless home alarm could be upgraded frequently on the backside so users will not need to do anything whatsoever to learn from the system’s modifications. Securing in which you safety of your respective spouse and children while you are not in your house is the best main objective. Choose exactly the most reliable alert system you could afford.

There are many benefits to a physical fitness program no matter the age of the individual. The older we become the more the body can benefit from a functional strength training routine to help the body maintain strength, flexibility and mobility. As we age one of the most fearful things is losing independence. The best way to maintain mobility and independence is to perform regular functional strength training exercises.

Functional strength training simply involves exercising in a manner that reflects movements youd do in every day life. Instead of sitting down using machines, youd be using light weights, resistance bands, and medicine balls to work the body across all planes of motion. Basically you want to be moving as youre exercising not just sitting down and applying resistance on some machine. A body in motion tends to stay in motion. There are only a handful of different human movement patterns and they dont change as you age, only the intensity of the movements change.

As a certified Charleston personal trainer I regularly assist seniors with a functional strength training routine to help with strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility. All the core components of fitness should be integrated into a senior fitness program for best results.

Contrary to popular belief, it is never too late to start a fitness program. Studies have shown that adults over 50 can increase their strength by 25% in less than 20 weeks. Continued dedication to the exercise routine is the best way to see results. Working with a certified fitness professional can help to assure the routine is safe and effective.

A senior fitness program led by a trained instructor will provide a perfect set of fun and safe exercises to help increase strength, flexibility and health. Other benefits of using a professional for an effective fitness program include reducing injury, proper monitoring, and motivation.

It’s easy to stick to a routine when you have someone to help keep you motivated and accountable to your goals. Once youve decided to start exercising its all a matter of getting on the right plan and sticking with it. As the owner of a Charleston fitness facility I can tell you that selecting the most appropriate fitness center is an important decision. To help in the process, here are a few things you should look for. First is inquiring whether or not the facility has an AED available and if the staff has CPR training.

Next, its always a good idea to make a personal appearance to meet the staff and look things over for cleanliness and maintenance of equipment. Dont think twice about asking to see their cleaning routine of the equipment that will be used. A clean facility is just as important as the training and personality of the staff.

If youre not comfortable with the staff at the facility youll eventually lose your desire to show up for exercise and that will surely put a damper on the effectiveness of your program.

Whether you are caring for natural teeth or dentures, seniors face an array of special oral concerns such as root decay and periodontal disease. You can keep your smile healthy by following routine proper oral care and making regular visits to your dentist in Lincoln Park, Dr. Jeffrey Feffer. It is estimated that almost 250 million people, approximately 40%, of the adult population in Europe, the United States and Japan suffer from some form of a loss of teeth. Incidence of tooth loss generally increases with age and can pose a great threat to the health of your smile. There is no reason for you to not keep your teeth your entire life, providing you maintain a healthy balanced diet and practice good oral hygiene.

Special Issues to Know About as a Senior

During your senior years, even if you brush and floss your teeth regularly you may face certain issues when it comes to your oral health. In older adults, cavities and decay on the root surfaces of the teeth appear to be more common. This means it is even more important for you to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily and visit your dentist in Lincoln Park regularly.

Sensitivity can also be an increasing problem as you age because your gums naturally recede over time, exposing areas of the tooth that are not protected by enamel. These areas are particularly prone to pain caused by cold or hot foods or beverages. In more severe cases, cold air, as well as sensitivity to sour and sweet drinks and foods can occur. If you experience tooth sensitivity, try an anti-sensitivity toothpaste, but if the problem persists, see your dentist as it may be an indication of a more serious condition, such as a cavity or a cracked or fractured tooth.

Additionally, gum disease is a potentially serious condition that can affect people of all ages, especially over 40. A number of factors can increase the severity of gum disease, including:

*Bad diet
*Poor oral hygiene
*Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer
*Environmental factors such as stress and smoking
*Certain medications that influence gum condition.

Since the earliest stages of gum disease are reversible, it is important to have it diagnosed early on. Regular dental checkups aid in preventing gum disease from developing in the first place by practicing proper oral hygiene.

How Can I Take Care of My Teeth as I Age?

Proper oral care can keep you smiling well into retirement. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristle brush. Flossing can help save your teeth by removing plaque between your teeth and below the gumline that your toothbrush can’t reach. Many people don’t realize how important it is to take care of your gums.

Gingivitis is caused by the bacteria found in plaque that attack the gums with symptoms including red, swollen gums and possible bleeding when you brush. If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to visit your dentist in Lakeview immediately because gingivitis can lead to periodontal (gum) disease if the problems persist. Severe gum disease affects approximately 25 percent of 65 to 74 year olds.

Additionally, if you suffer from arthritis, you may find it difficult to brush and floss for proper oral health care and prevention of diseases. When regular oral care is too difficult, your dentist can provide alternatives to aid in flossing and prescribe medication to keep the infection from getting worse. Certain dental products are designed to make dental care less painful for arthritis sufferers.

Contact Dr. Feffer, your Lincoln Park dentist, today for more information on how to properly care for your teeth as you age. Maintaining a healthy mouth may keep your body healthier and help you avoid diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
